The Various Kinds of Locks

The right lock can mean the difference between your safety, and lack of safety. In the locksmith industry, different locksmiths like to parade around about what kind of locks they believe will do the best in keeping you safe and secure in your property. The truth is there are a lot of different locks for a lot of different doors, and for a lot of different reasons.

Locks are specific in general; that’s why you have to have the right key in order to get into most places, and with locks being this specific also means that you need have these same locks used for very specific reasons to go along with it.

The number of options when looking at locks can be overwhelming, but going through each lock, and taking in the many different security factors before purchasing in the lock, in particular, is probably the best option anyone can do to make the best decision possible.

Locks were born out of necessity because in order to keep yourself safe you need the outside of your door locked from any and all possible intruders. The oldest known locking mechanism dates back almost 6,000 years ago and was discovered in the ancient Mesopotamian kingdom of Assyria, and the Ancient Egyptians also developed a similar technology and are given credit for creating the first real mechanical lock. All of these locks were made out of wood, just to show how much the technology has changed today.

Locks actually weren’t changed to metal till the Romans made that change, and keys were a sign of wealth. If someone had a lock on them then that means that they have something worth protecting and having something worth protecting shows that you have wealth. No major innovations came until the 18th century, and the innovations have continued and will continue for the years ahead.

There are hundreds of different locks that you can use to protect yourself and for a hundred different scenarios. From everything to access control systems, and keyless locks systems to just normal locks that you use every single day. So, let’s start small, and then go through some of the most popular locks that are on the market.

The four most common are padlocks, deadbolts, knob locks, and levers.

Padlocks:

Remember when you were in high school and you had to find a way to keep your locker safe? Well, some people used combination locks that are a form of Padlocks where you would have to create your own combination that only you know. Well, some people used padlocks that require a key, and it doesn’t attach to anything else.

That’s why padlocks are unlike every other kind of lock because they don’t need to be installed to anything; you can use them anywhere and carry them anywhere, and then just use them on whatever you need to be locked from lockers to safes.

As mentioned earlier there are two varieties of padlocks: combination and keyed. Both are used for similar reasons, and they are extremely popular in both areas.

Padlocks can have a shrouded shackle, which is an extension of the body where the shoulders of the padlock. These are extremely popular and can help keep your belongings safe but should probably not be used on your doors.

Deadbolts:

Deadbolts are generally installed on external doors, and they have a lot more options than padlocks, and they are attached and have to be installed to the door. Deadbolts are unique because they come in three primary varieties: single, double, and lockable thumb turn.
Single Cylinder is normally found on the front doors of most Americans homes. There is a key cylinder on the outside and a thumb turn on the inside to help open or close the lock. There is one weakness with these locks, is that if the access inside the house is available, like by using a nearby window, then it can be opened by just simply using a thumb turn.

Double Cylinder deadbolts require a key on both sides of the door to open, and just make the problem with the single cylinder. The only disadvantage of these locks is that you always need a key every time you need to open the door. This can be a problem in your residential property, and when there is a fire emergency.

The Lockable Thumb turn is the last deadbolt lock and is called this because it has a lockable thumb turn that works on the inside and can be locked on the inside if the owner chooses to do so or not. So, when your home, you can choose to not lock the thumb turn, and open the door easier than normal, but if you’re out of town, then it might be a good idea to keep that door locked.

Knob Locks:

These locks are used in almost every possible residential situation on exterior doors in addition to the deadbolt locks. These locks are used for the security of someone’s doors. It should be noted that these locks should never be used on the exterior of the door because the problem is that the lock cylinder is in the knob itself. Which could lead to someone being locked inside of a place, and not being able to make sure no one comes in.

These locks are used inside of your house for locking your bedroom, but not useful in protecting the exterior of your house because they are easily broken.

Lever Handle Locks:

Lever handle locks are frequently used for interior doors in commercial settings. These doors are easier to open then knob locks because they have a large push down handle, instead of a grasp and turn style used by other locks. That’s why these doors are perfect for the inside of commercial businesses especially rooms that are used a lot, but they should never be used for protecting the exterior of your business.
